The San Diego County Real-Time RTK Correction System
Track: Geodetic Control
Author(s): Michael Binge

The county of San Diego has recently implemented a real-time correction system for GPS users. The system is currently based on 20 continuous operating receiver stations located within the county of San Diego. It is designed to be used with Survey (precise) grade (dual frequency) GPS receivers. The system “streams” correction factors to the end user via a modem.

The project is a cooperative effort with the County of San Diego acting as the lead agency and the California Spatial Reference Center (CSRC) and the University of California at San Diego as the principal developers. The system utilizes HPWREN (High Performance Wireless Research Education Network) technology and the San Diego County Sheriff’s communications system to stream corrections providing positional accuracies of 1-2 centimeters horizontally and 6-10 centimeters for orthometric heights.
