Surveyors and engineers should make GIS part of their business because we are experts in services that GIS professionals are seeking help with. These services are ones that we perform daily to produce a plan; however, you probably do not see them as a separate product. There are opportunities to expand your business by providing these services required to build and maintain GIS systems. Government agencies since 9/11 have been encouraged by Homeland Security to adopt standardized layering data sets that you can create. In addition, there are real business benefits from storing your company records in a GIS system. Recorded survey plats leave you exposed to challenges forever. Location tolerances are usually greater in a GIS, which decreases your liability. Once the process is established for payment for services; utilities, municipalities, and large organizations are very regular. GIS means “guaranteed income stream.”
