Introduction: The Medical College of Georgia FitKid project is investigating the effects of an after-school physical activity (PA) program on childhood obesity in a three-year study.

Purpose: To examine whether living in a neighborhood with low socioeconomic status (SES) was related to poor cardiovascular (CV) risk factors.

Methods: Subjects (n = 594) were children enrolled in 17 schools in East GA. Home addresses was geo-coded. Median household income (HHI) from census block group data was used to determine SES. CV risk factors (adiposity, blood pressure and cholesterol) were collected during baseline health screenings.

Results: 221 students lived in low SES (HHI <$30,000) neighborhoods. No significant relationship was found between residence and cardiovascular risk factors.

Conclusion: While household income was not found to affect the CV risk factors collected, other SES factors may. Therefore, further study is needed to adequately determine the relationship between SES and CV risk factors (funded by NIH-DK 63391).
