GIS Analysis of HIV/AIDS and VCT-ART Services in Maryland
Author(s): Egondu Onyejekwe, EARTHMAP Foundation for African HIV/AIDS & ORID

Introduction: In 2002, Maryland had the third highest annual AIDS cases. This project explores the type and amount of HIV/AIDS voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) services in Maryland and the availability and provision of antiretroviral drugs (ART) to those who test positive, especially women and minorities. It also explores ways to link VCT positives to practitioners who can provide ART.

Purpose: The project studies the effectiveness of VCT and ART interventions in Maryland.

Method: The method includes maps of current and cumulative data on the incidence of HIV/AIDS in Maryland including density maps of various epidemiological demographics and profiles and locations of practitioners and other service providers.

Results: Results will be provided in three basic formats: as maps, charts, and tables

Conclusion: The proposed GIS analysis project should yield better patterns and relationships of HIV/AIDS data in Maryland that can assist in future planning of interventions.
