Rivers, Roads and Bridges of Gill, Montague and Erving
In the past, it has been said that it is impossible to leave town without going over a bridge. Although we know this is not true, the fact that it is repeated from generation to generation shows that bridges are a large part of our community, mainly because Gill, Montague, and Erving border the Connecticut River. Our map shows some of these bridges. We used a GPS to collect the geographic information (latitude and longitude) for the bridges.
Other important parts of our community include the Turners Falls Dam and the Power Canal, also seen on the map. The railroads were built for transportation of goods into and out of our towns; they are not used for transportation of people. Routes 2 and 63 run through our towns and are important because many people use them in their daily travels.
